February Current Events

1. What feeling does this photograph create in you, the viewer? This photograph creates a feeling of sadness that someone would do such a thing.
2. What story do you think this photograph tells the viewer? Does it capture something that would be hard to convey in words? The photograph tells the story of a poor human being that had to endure a hard experience and now has to live with it for the rest of her life. It does not capture something that would be hard to convey in words but the feeling is better seen than told.
3. Who or what is the subject of this photograph? The subject is the poor woman who was tortured.
4. Is the lighting natural or artificial? What time of day is it? The lighting is artificial.
5. If it is a color photo, what colors stand out? If it is black and white, what is the effect? The colors around her head draw the attention to her face.
6. What part or parts are out of focus, if any? What is the effect? No parts are out of focus. They don't have to be because you are automatically drawn to her face.
7. How is the picture composed? Is the subject centered? Is the "rule of thirds" followed? The picture is a portrait, the subject is centered.
8. What strikes you most about the photo? Why do you think that is? What strikes me most is her face and why someone had to go through that. The picture did not need a composition technique because one is automatically drawn to what the picture is conveying.
9. What is the background for this image? It is a solid background so it will not take attention away from the subject.
10. Is this photo timely? Does it have a timeless quality? Both? Might it become iconic? Why or why not? Yes, the photo is timely and iconic. This photo could serve for any purpose like violence against women and will never fade because of the impact it has made.

Mtv Generation?

    1. Your age group has been referred to as the "MTV Generation," which carries a negative connotation of teen-agers that have little to no interest in anything, and even if you did, your attention span is grossly limited. Is this true? Yes, this is true because teenagers nowadays spend their time on useless stuff such as watching reality shows that do not have a point to it and playing video games that will not get you anywhere. The attention span of a teenager is limited. If there is not interest in a subject the teenager blocks their brain out of trying to learn about it and when they try the attention is very limited.
    2. Where do you get your news? I'm not going to lie. I rarely watch the news. I think the only news I watch once in a while is E! News which only talks about celebrity events as opposed to current events. However, every morning I do listen to the radio where News Channel 5 talks about the headlines; so, I learn some news every morning.
    3. If a news article is accompanied by a photograph, do you read the article or rely totally on the visual? It depends on what I feel like. Sometimes the picture will be so intriguing that I want to know more about the story and I will read it. Other times, however, the picture is enough for me.
    4. Is it impossible for a "complicated message to be relayed in a 10-second sound bite" that the news media uses to get the message across? Is this possible? What are the advantages of using photographs? What are the disadvantages? It is not impossible however it will be less strong because not all of the information about the story will be said and therefore people will not always know the importance of a story. The advantage of using photographs is that they tell a story much faster than having the person read an article. The disadvantages, however, are that the story can be misinterpreted by the picture, the individual will not learn enough about the story only the main thing, and that the person viewing the picture will not have enough knowledge about the current event.

Analyzing Environmental Portraits

1. Natural light or flash used? How do you know? Flash was used because it was inside. Clearly lighting was used to shine on the painter.
2. List the photo composition techniques used. Rule of thirds is used in the photograph.
3. Describe details of the subject. (Clothing, eyes, hair, pose, facial expression) The subject is seated and is dressed normal showing a relaxed pose. This could depict how relaxed she feels when she paints or is around these paintings.
4. Describe details of the background environment. (colors, textures, lighting, indoors/outdoors) The paintings in the background add color to the picture and also add texture because the paintings show something unique.
5. From these descriptions, write a sentence(s) describing the personality of this subject. The woman seems to be a relaxed individual who is very creative.
6. How did the combination of pose, expression, background and lighting create your perception of this subject? This combination helpes create the perception because when I think of art and of an individual who paints I think that that is what relaxes them and what the love to do. This is why I think of her as calm and creative because not everyone can paint what she paints.

1. Natural light or flash used? How do you know? Natural light is used because it is outside.
2. List the photo composition techniques used. Selective focus is used as the focus is on the kid and the pumpkins are in the background.
3. Describe details of the subject. (Clothing, eyes, hair, pose, facial expression) The child is doing a silly pose and is smiling showing that he is having fun while he is perhaps picking out pumpkins for halloween.
4. Describe details of the background environment. (colors, textures, lighting, indoors/outdoors) It is outdoors and the background is grass and pumpkins. The background environment could illustrate the season of the year and time of the month.
5. From these descriptions, write a sentence(s) describing the personality of this subject. The child looks like most of the other children who like to have fun and are silly.
6. How did the combination of pose, expression, background and lighting create your perception of this subject? These elements tied together helped my perception because they properly depict the time of season and portray fun and innocence through the photo.
